Beloved Teochew fried carrot cake stall at Zion Riverside run by a hearing-impaired couple, serving both black and white versions.
Lau Goh Teochew Chye Thow Kway at Zion Riverside Food Centre is a well-known hawker stall run by a hearing-impaired couple, serving traditional Teochew-style fried carrot cake that has earned a devoted following. The stall offers both the classic white version, where mashed carrot cake pieces are pan-fried with egg until crispy on the outside and soft within, and the black version with sweet dark sauce that adds a caramelised depth.A yuan-yang option lets you enjoy both in a single plate, and the generous wisps of egg mixed through the carrot cake give each bite a lovely richness. The stall's story of resilience and dedication adds to its charm, with orders placed by pointing at pictures on the menu board. Despite the communication differences, the service is warm and the food speaks for itself. The white version highlights the natural sweetness of the radish cake with slightly crispy edges, while the black version delivers a satisfying interplay of sweet and savoury.
Off-peak visits yield crispier results, as the cook has more time with the pan. Point to your choice at Lau Goh Teochew Chye Thow Kway for carrot cake that is honest, flavourful, and made with heart. This is hawker food at its most human and most delicious.

Located at Zion Road, at the food centre. Traditional comfort food for me. The boss had difficulties hearing. So best way to order was to point to what you wanted. …

The kitchen is clean for Hawker level. Because only uncle operates it as he is deaf. Need to point to the menu for ordering as Auntie is also partially hard-of hearing as well. Be patient when ordering as Uncle cooks it in batches and it’s only him. I ordered for a weekday dinner and it took awhile. The carrot cake is delicious! I got the mix of black & white. The black is sweet and smoky while the white is crispy, lighter and more savory. Even though I ask for chili, I don’t think the chili is that spicy at all. Better off using chili sauce from other stalls that your fellow diner will get. Price is very competitive at 5,6,8,10 deending on size.

Satisfies my carrot cake cravings completely! Some days the owner fries it super crispy, and other days not so much. I appreciate the mixed option but my love for black carrot cake still… takes the cake haha. Their sweet sauce is really *chefs kiss*

Definitely one of the best fried carrot cakes out there in Singapore. If you love your carrot cakes crispy and the cake bits chopped up finely, you’ll love this. The dark soy sauce they use was also so fragrant and delicious. Will definitely be back for more!

Nice crispy fried carrot cake.Wait time for black/white carrot cake at least 20min. Prefer the white carrot cake side as it is crispy on the outside but soft inside. Will come back. Btw do have patience as both the chef and server are mute.
