Specialist unagi restaurant at Guoco Tower serving charcoal-grilled freshwater eel over rice.
Unatoto at Guoco Tower is a dedicated unagi (freshwater eel) restaurant that specialises in the Japanese art of charcoal-grilling eel. Each piece is basted in a sweet-savoury tare sauce and grilled over white charcoal until the skin caramelises and the flesh turns tender and flaky. The signature unadon — grilled eel laid over steamed rice — is the main draw, available in different portion sizes to satisfy varying appetites.
The restaurant keeps its focus tight, doing one thing exceptionally well rather than spreading across a broad menu. Beyond the classic unadon, Unatoto offers unagi don with sides such as miso soup, pickles, and a raw egg for mixing, as well as hitsumabushi (a Nagoya-style eel rice bowl meant to be eaten in three stages). The Guoco Tower basement location is compact but well-organised, with counter seating that puts the grilling action on display.
Service is swift, making it a practical choice for office workers in the Tanjong Pagar area who want a satisfying lunch without a long wait. For unagi lovers working or living near Tanjong Pagar, Unatoto delivers expertly grilled eel at prices that make a regular habit feasible. It is a focused, no-nonsense eel fix that hits the mark every time.

For a Japanese establishment, the service was not commendable. Had the set meal which I think the portion is fine. The food was average at most. The environment was crazy hot & stuffy even with the portable air cooler. Dining in was uncomfortable, simply wanted to settle the food & get out asap.

A last minute search for a good unagi joint brought this up. We were lucky that it was only moderately filled being on a Sunday night. Had the deluxe and it did not disappoint. Tender On the inside with a nicely charred skin. Highly recommended.

The unagi was exceptionally well-prepared — tender, flavorful, and perfectly glazed with a rich, caramelised sauce. The balance between sweetness and smokiness was spot on, enhancing the natural fattiness of the eel without overpowering it. …
